There is no such thing as a totally risk free investment.

All investments, (including those that are guaranteed to return principal), carry some sort of risk.

But those who are willing to learn just a little bit of how investing works, can easily earn two to three times what traditional sources guide people into.

There are several types of risk that a given investment can have:

Emotional Risk: The risk you will get depressed if you watch the market too much. Stocks go up and down like a carousel. The media is controlled. If you watch it, they will manipulate your emotions, and get you to react in ways harmful to yourself.

Market Risk: The risk that an investment can lose its value in the market.

Note: the market value of a stock only applies to what you can sell it for NOW.

There is a simple trading system, that eliminates this almost entirely. I call it the Row Boat.

Interest Rate Risk: The risk that an investment will lose value due to a change in interest rates (applies to fixed-income investments, and some REITs)

Political Risk: The risk that a investment will lose value because of political action in that country.

(companies located in developing countries are particularly susceptible to this, beware of Chinese stocks)

Legislative Risk: The risk that an investment will lose value or any other advantages that it offers because of new legislation (all investments are subject to this risk)

Elections have consequences. Don’t vote if you don’t know.

Liquidity Risk: The risk that an investment will not be available for liquidation when it is needed (applies to fixed-income investments and real estate or other property that may not be able to be sold quickly at an profitable price)

Purchasing Power Risk: The risk that an investment will lose its purchasing power due to inflation (applies to all fixed-income investments)

Tax Risk: The risk that an investment will lose its value or return on capital because of taxation (most investments are subject to this risk)
